About Crystal Beach

Crystal Beach is the heart of the Bolivar Peninsula, the low strip of sand and marsh across the channel from Galveston, reached by the free state ferry. There is no seawall out here and no high-rises — just beach houses on stilts, dune line, and sand firm enough to drive on, which is how most people use it. The Gulf in front of it is shallow and easily stirred, so the water color runs from silty brown on a hard onshore wind to a clean green when the wind lies down. Weekends and holidays fill the sand with trucks and canopies; a Tuesday in October can be close to empty.

What this camera is good for

Getting here from Galveston means the ferry, and the wait can be long on a summer weekend — factor it into the drive, not just the forecast.

Common questions

Is the Crystal Beach camera live?
Yes — it streams on the operator's own site, and the link on this page always opens whichever stream is currently running.
Does it cost anything to watch?
No. Salty Forecast is completely free — no ads, no account, no paid tier, and nothing on this page is behind a sign-up.
What are the tides at Bolivar Peninsula today?
Today's high and low tide times for Bolivar Peninsula are on the tide chart page, drawn from the NOAA station at Sievers Cove, Goat Island. Tide state changes what the beach looks like on camera — at low water the beach is at its widest.
Why does the camera look hazy or dark?
Live cameras sit outdoors: rain on the lens, salt spray, fog and low light all affect the picture. Night views are lit only by whatever is nearby. If the feed is down entirely, that is the operator's camera rather than this page — the conditions above still update.
