Fishing Bolivar Peninsula
The peninsula runs northeast from the Galveston ferry landing as a thin strip of sand with the Gulf on one side and East Galveston Bay on the other, which means you pick your water by the wind rather than by the drive. Surf fishing off Crystal Beach turns on when a light southerly greens up the first bar, and the bay side gives waders shell and grass shorelines for trout and redfish when the beach is blown out. Driving on the sand is part of life here — check the tide before you commit to soft, wet ruts. The ferry line is the peninsula's clock, and a summer Saturday can cost you an hour each way. Fall pulls flounder out of the marsh drains, and winter fronts push fish into the deeper bayous.
Target species
- Speckled trout
- Redfish
- Flounder
- Black drum
Local tip: Moving water is what you want on the bay side, and the surf fishes best on a rising tide with a light onshore breeze — a hard southwest wind muddies the beachfront for days.
