Fishing Dahlonega
Dahlonega had its gold rush two decades before California did, and the terrain that produced the gold still decides what people do here. The Chestatee and the Etowah come out of the mountains north of town over shoals and boulders — cold enough up high for trout, warm enough downstream for bass. Amicalola Falls drops off the escarpment nearby, and the approach trail toward the Appalachian Trail's southern terminus climbs from that same ridge, which is why a steady line of thru-hikers moves through town in late winter and early spring. Vineyards spread across the foothills all around, making a clear, mild afternoon its own kind of forecast question. Summer storms stack up over the ridge line fast, and the rivers stain just as quickly.
Target species
- Hiking trails
- Waterfalls
- Trout fishing
- Vineyards
Local tip: No tide — mind the rain and the elevation. Rivers rise and color after mountain storms, thru-hiker season runs late winter into spring, and the first crisp days of October are the best walking weather of the year.
