Fishing Ellijay
Apples run this town's calendar. Orchards cover the ridges around Ellijay, and from late summer into November the weekend traffic is all people driving out for them. Two rivers meet here, the Cartecay and the Coosawattee, both shallow and rocky and both floated hard once the water warms — kayaks, tubes, and a fair amount of scraping in a dry August. The ridges out toward Mulberry Gap have made this one of north Georgia's mountain biking hubs, with terrain that rides beautifully in cool, dry weather and turns greasy the day after rain. Trout hold in the feeder creeks up high, and the slower river stretches give up bass and bream through the warm months.
Target species
- Mountain biking
- River floating
- Apple orchards
- Trout fishing
Local tip: No tide up here — plan around rain and season. Rivers need recent water to float and take a day or two to clear afterward, trails ride best dry and cool, and October is the busiest month of the year in this valley.
