What moves the sheepshead score
A cool-water bite
The curve here peaks in the 55 to 70°F range and falls off as the water warms, so sheepshead score best in winter and drop in summer. These ranges are rules of thumb.
Structure, and wind that lets you reach it
They sit on pilings, docks, oyster bars and rock, anything that grows barnacles. Wind counts as much as tide here, because it decides whether you can hold a boat or a rod tip on a piling.
Rules and seasons are separate from conditions and change by region and by order. Florida’s are on FWC’s sheepshead page ; other states set their own.
Common questions
When is the sheepshead bite best?
In cooler water, roughly the 50s through about 70°F, which on this coast means winter into early spring. In summer heat the bite fades, which the score reflects.
Does this tell me the sheepshead limit?
No. It scores conditions only. Check FWC's sheepshead page for Florida's rules; other states set their own.
