Fishing Macon

Macon's outdoor life is built around the Ocmulgee. Amerson River Park turned a stretch of river bottom north of downtown into trail and river access, and the water there is easy enough to float, paddle, or wade on a warm afternoon. Downstream, the Ocmulgee Mounds rise above the same river on ground people have used for thousands of years, with paths through the floodplain and some of the best birding in middle Georgia. Trails tie much of it together, and the river gives up bass, bream, and catfish for anyone who brings a rod. This is fall-line country, so the Ocmulgee swings hard with upstream rain — brown and pushy after a wet week, clear and lazy by September.

Target species

  • Paddling
  • Greenway trails
  • River tubing
  • Bass fishing

Local tip: No tide this far up — river level is the thing. Give the Ocmulgee a few days to drop and clear after heavy rain, and plan summer outings for the morning, before the heat and the storms arrive.
