Fishing New Orleans
New Orleans does its outdoor living below sea level and right along the water's edge. The Lake Pontchartrain lakefront gives the city a long, breezy stretch for running, riding and casting; City Park's oaks and lagoons carry walkers, paddlers and pickup games; and Bayou St. John is flat, protected water that kayaks and paddleboards use on almost any calm morning. Levee tops are the real long-distance trail here, running for miles above the river with ships sliding past. Fishing is never far away either — the lake, the passes to its east and the marsh below the city hold redfish as good as any in the country. Heat, humidity and afternoon thunderstorms shape the summer, so mornings are when things actually happen.
Target species
- Lakefront cycling
- Kayaking
- Park running
- Redfish
Local tip: The lake and the bayous rise and fall on a small, often once-daily tide, which means wind is what really changes conditions — a sustained southerly stacks water against the lakefront and chops it up quickly. From June into September, plan for the early morning and let the afternoon go to the storms.
