Fishing Slidell

Slidell sits in the northeast corner of Lake Pontchartrain, where the Rigolets and Chef Menteur Pass link the lake to Lake Borgne and the salt water beyond. Those passes are the fishery: trout and redfish stack along the bridge and rail structure whenever current is running, and the marsh ponds and bayous east of town hold redfish and black drum through the year. Pontchartrain itself is enormous and shallow, so wind builds a short, mean chop across it faster than newcomers expect and there is no quick way off. When the open water is unfishable, the north shore still has pine-woods trail, a long paved rail-trail and protected bayou paddling.

Target species

  • Speckled trout
  • Redfish
  • Black drum
  • Flounder

Local tip: Louisiana tides run small and usually diurnal, so current through the passes tends to arrive in one strong stretch a day rather than two. Wind does the rest of the work — a sustained southeast lifts water into the marsh and floods the ponds, while a norther behind a front drains them and packs fish into the deeper bayous.
