Big blue catfish and white bass round out the fishing, and alligator gar hold in the old river channel. Falcon State Park puts camping right on the shoreline, and this stretch of the river is some of the best birding in the country, with South Texas specialties that occur almost nowhere else in the United States. Heat from May through September is extreme and shade is scarce.
