Fishing South Padre Island
The Lower Laguna Madre is the reason people move to South Padre — a hypersaline, gin-clear, knee-deep lagoon floored with seagrass and pocked with sand holes, about as good a place to sight-cast a redfish as exists in Texas. Trout and reds hold the grass edges and the spoil banks along the Intracoastal, while the Brazos Santiago jetties and the Brownsville Ship Channel pull in tarpon and snook through the warm months — this is far enough south that snook are a real target, not an accident. The same shallow bay flats make the island a kiteboarding destination, and the dunes and boardwalks draw birders straight through migration. Summer heat is serious, and water this skinny means wind and cloud cover matter more than almost anything else.
Target species
- Speckled trout
- Redfish
- Snook
- Tarpon
Local tip: Sight-fishing wants a calm, sunny morning on rising water; the jetties turn on hardest with a strong tide and clean green water.
