Fishing Houston

Getting outside in Houston is a morning sport for most of the year. The bayou greenway network stitches the city together with paved trail — Buffalo Bayou Park and Memorial Park carry runners, cyclists, and dog walkers before the heat index climbs, and the bayous themselves make surprisingly good flat-water paddling right past the skyline. Disc golf courses, public golf, and park cookouts fill the shoulder seasons, while Brazos Bend State Park southwest of town adds hiking, camping, and alligator watching within an hour, and anglers have Lake Houston, the San Jacinto, and the bay a short drive east. What actually decides the day is humidity and storms: sea-breeze cells build from the southeast on summer afternoons and carry real lightning, and heavy tropical rain closes trails and browns the bayous for days.

Target species

  • Greenway trails
  • Kayaking
  • Disc golf
  • Bass fishing

Local tip: No tide to plan around here — plan around heat and lightning. From June into September the usable window runs dawn to mid-morning, and the first true cool front in October is when the trails and patios come back to life.
