Fishing Lake Conroe
Lake Conroe backs the West Fork of the San Jacinto against the Sam Houston National Forest, and the north end still holds standing timber and creek channels that fish nothing like the seawalled south end. Crappie pile onto brush piles and bridge columns, largemouth work the timber and whatever grass survives the carp, and stocked hybrid stripers chase shad in open water. Weekend boat traffic is a genuine factor — this is Houston's playground lake, and by mid-morning on a Saturday the main lake is a washing machine. Campgrounds and swim beaches on the national forest side make it an easy weekend for people who never pick up a rod. The lake also rises fast when the San Jacinto watershed takes a tropical downpour.
Target species
- Largemouth bass
- Crappie
- Hybrid striped bass
- Blue catfish
Local tip: No tides — fish the calendar and the crowd. Weekday mornings in spring and fall are the best water you will find here, and summer belongs to first light.
