Fishing Jekyll Island

Jekyll is a state-owned island with a narrow, shoaling creek running behind it — Jekyll Creek carries the Intracoastal and gets thin enough at low water that boat traffic pays close attention. That creek and the surrounding marsh hold redfish, trout, and black drum, while the pier at the north end near Driftwood Beach gives bank anglers access to real current. St. Andrew Sound to the south is big, open water that turns ugly when wind opposes tide. Because most of the island stays undeveloped, it is a cycling and beach-walking island first, with miles of paved path, the sea turtle center, and the bleached driftwood shore at the north end. The marsh is in good shape here and the fish see less pressure than the mainland creeks.

Target species

  • Redfish
  • Spotted seatrout
  • Black drum
  • Sheepshead

Local tip: With eight feet of range, low water exposes the oyster rakes and bars — useful for learning structure, hard on lower units. Fish the flood into the grass and the fall back out of it.
