Fishing Lake Burton

Steep ridges come down to the water on Burton, the uppermost lake in the Tallulah chain and one of the deepest in north Georgia. Depth is the defining fact here: the lake stratifies hard through summer, stays clear most of the year, and fish that were shallow in April can be well down the bluff by July. Spotted and largemouth bass work the rock, the dock lines, and the bluff ends, with crappie and bream holding the same structure. Swimmers, skiers, and pontoons own the coves once the water warms, and then the crowd disappears, the leaves turn, and the winter drawdown lays bare the shoreline worth remembering. Cold air pools in these coves overnight, even in August.

Target species

  • Spotted bass
  • Largemouth bass
  • Crappie
  • Bluegill

Local tip: No tide up here — go by temperature and light. First and last light are the windows all summer, and once the lake turns over in fall the fish spread back out shallow.
