Fishing Galveston

Galveston Bay is the largest estuary in Texas, and the island lies across its mouth with the Gulf on one side and West Bay behind it. The North and South jetties at Bolivar Roads funnel every fish moving in or out, the surf along the seawall turns on when the water greens up and the wind lays down, and wade fishermen work the shell and grass shorelines of West and East Bay all summer. Trinity River runoff can push the salt line miles south after a wet spell, and the trout move with it. The seawall itself is ten miles of paved beachfront for walking and riding, and San Luis Pass at the west end fishes beautifully and drowns people every year — wade it with respect.

Target species

  • Speckled trout
  • Redfish
  • Flounder
  • Black drum

Local tip: Tide range here is small; wind moves more water than the moon. A light southeast breeze on an incoming greens up the surf and lights up the rocks.
