Fishing Lake Hartwell

Hartwell is a big Corps of Engineers impoundment on the upper Savannah River, and its fishery is built on blueback herring — a pelagic baitfish that pulls bass off the bank and out into open water, which is why anglers here spend more time watching electronics than casting at cover. Spring brings herring onto shallow hard-bottom points and shoals to spawn, and bass and stripers follow them in. Summer squeezes the stripers into a narrow band of cool, oxygenated water under the thermocline, and lake level swings with rainfall and Corps releases. With state parks, campgrounds, and swim beaches on both the Georgia and South Carolina shores, it is a full recreation lake once the water warms. Storms build fast over the foothills on July afternoons.

Target species

  • Largemouth bass
  • Striped bass
  • Spotted bass
  • Crappie

Local tip: No tide, but generation at the dam pulls current and turns fish on. In summer, fish the first hour of light and keep an eye on the afternoon radar over the mountains.
