Fishing Tarpon Springs
Tarpon Springs is a Greek sponge-diving town that still smells like its docks, and the water in front of it is the transition between Tampa Bay's flats and the Nature Coast's endless grass. Anclote Key sits offshore breaking the Gulf chop, with grass and sand flats behind it holding trout and redfish, while the Anclote River gives snook and juvenile tarpon a warm, protected place to winter. Nearshore rock piles a few miles out produce gag grouper and mackerel on a short run. Between the sponge docks, the boat-only beach on Anclote Key, and easy flat-water paddling on the river, plenty of people come here without a rod. This far north, hard winter fronts matter — snook here live closer to their cold limit than the ones down south.
Target species
- Spotted seatrout
- Redfish
- Snook
- Grouper
Local tip: Rising water over warming grass is the trout and redfish window; when a front drops the temperature, look to the river and the deeper channels instead.
