Fishing Biloxi
Biloxi occupies a peninsula between its back bay and the Mississippi Sound, with Deer Island lying just offshore as both a windbreak and a fish-holding shoreline in its own right. Trout, redfish, flounder and black drum work that island's edges, the bridge and pier pilings, and the marsh drains around the back bay. Farther out, Ship, Horn and Cat islands — all part of Gulf Islands National Seashore — separate the Sound from the open Gulf, and the charter fleet here fishes inside or outside of them depending on what the wind is doing. The Sound is shallow enough that a stiff blow turns it into short, ugly chop and browns the water in a hurry.
Target species
- Speckled trout
- Redfish
- Black drum
- Flounder
Local tip: Tide range in the Sound is roughly a foot and frequently arrives as one daily rise and fall, so current windows are short and worth planning around. A southeast wind pushes cleaner water in behind Deer Island; a hard norther drops the whole Sound and pins fish into the deeper cuts.
