About Anna Maria Island
Anna Maria Island is the northernmost of the Sarasota-area barrier islands, a seven-mile run of low-rise beach towns between Tampa Bay and Longboat Pass. Holmes Beach sits in the middle of it, where the sand is wide and flat and the shoreline faces almost due west into the Gulf. That westerly aspect is why the sunsets here are the island's main event, and also why an afternoon sea breeze puts a chop on the water before it does anywhere inshore.
