About Ellis Beach
Ellis Beach gives a second angle on the North Padre shoreline, and on a long straight beach a second angle is worth having — surf size, water color and the reach of the sea breeze all vary along this coast more than a single frame suggests. What holds true anywhere on North Padre holds here: the Gulf runs green and reasonably clear when the wind is light, sandy and stirred when a strong southeast wind has been on it, and the swell is small outside of tropical season. Winter fronts drop the water level and flatten the surf almost overnight.
What this camera is good for
- Cross-checking surf and water color against the other Padre cams
- Wind strength across an open beach
- How busy this section of sand looks
- Fronts and squalls arriving off the Gulf

Common questions
- Is the Ellis Beach camera live?
- Yes, it is a live stream running 24 hours a day. If it looks dark, it is night at the camera.
- Does it cost anything to watch?
- No. Salty Forecast is completely free — no ads, no account, no paid tier, and nothing on this page is behind a sign-up.
- What are the tides at Padre Island Seashore today?
- Today's high and low tide times for Padre Island Seashore are on the tide chart page, drawn from the NOAA station at Corpus Christi, Bob Hall Pier. Tide state changes what the beach looks like on camera — at low water the beach is at its widest.
- Why does the camera look hazy or dark?
- Live cameras sit outdoors: rain on the lens, salt spray, fog and low light all affect the picture. Night views are lit only by whatever is nearby. If the feed is down entirely, that is the operator's camera rather than this page — the conditions above still update.
