Fishing Clarks Hill · Augusta
Clarks Hill, officially J. Strom Thurmond Lake, is one of the largest reservoirs in the Southeast, backing the Savannah River up above Augusta into long creek arms and enormous open flats. Blueback herring drive the fishery here just as they do on Hartwell upstream, so bass and stripers spend much of the year chasing bait instead of sitting on cover, and the open-water topwater bite in low light is why people fall for this lake. Crappie use the brush and the bridges, and hybrids school hard through fall. Corps and state parks put campgrounds, ramps, and swim beaches all the way around it, and there is enough water that it rarely feels crowded. Drawdowns move the shoreline a long way on a lake this flat.
Target species
- Largemouth bass
- Striped bass
- Hybrid striped bass
- Crappie
Local tip: Nothing tidal here — fish the light. Herring-eating bass and stripers feed hardest at first and last light, and current from generation at the dam sharpens the bite.
