Fishing Cocodrie

Cocodrie is a camp town at the end of the highway, the point where south Louisiana runs out of solid ground and Terrebonne Bay takes over. Marsh, bayou and open bay spread out in all directions, holding redfish along the shorelines, speckled trout over shell and around the platforms standing in the bay, and black drum and flounder down in the cuts. The LUMCON marine research station sits down here as well, which tells you what the coastal science community thinks of the view — the marsh in this basin is among the fastest-changing in the state. Nothing out here breaks the wind, so a breezy forecast reshapes the day far more than the tide ever does.

Target species

  • Redfish
  • Speckled trout
  • Black drum
  • Birding

Local tip: The daily tide is small and frequently a single rise and fall, which leaves wind as the practical water-level forecast. Reds are up on the shorelines after a few days of south wind pushing water into the marsh, and a hard front drops the whole basin, stacking fish in deep bayous and along the bay's channel edges.
