Fishing Columbus

Columbus pulled the old dams out of the Chattahoochee downtown and got back one of the longest stretches of urban whitewater anywhere — real rapids running past office buildings, rafted and kayaked all season, with flow deciding how big the waves get on any given day. The riverwalk follows that same water for miles along both banks and carries walkers, runners, and cyclists in a climate mild enough to use it in January. Below the city and east on the Flint, shoal bass hold the rock and current, a fish worth the trip on its own, along with largemouth and catfish. Summer here is south Georgia hot, which puts the trail and the river squarely in the morning.

Target species

  • Whitewater rafting
  • Kayaking
  • Riverwalk trails
  • Bass fishing

Local tip: No tide, but river level is everything downtown — flow sets how the whitewater runs, and heavy upstream rain both raises and dirties it. Cool mornings and the shoulder seasons are the best riverwalk weather.
