Fishing West Point Lake
Wind is the first thing to check on West Point. The lake runs long and relatively narrow along the Chattahoochee at LaGrange, with open stretches that let a breeze build a short, steep chop from a long way off — enough to beat up a small boat before you notice. Water color changes as you move up it, clearer toward the dam and stained in the river arms, and a wet week leaves the upper end muddy for days. Largemouth work wood, riprap, and the shallow creek flats, crappie stack on brush and bridge structure, and hybrids and catfish roam the open water. Corps parks and campgrounds ring the shoreline, which makes bank fishing and camping unusually easy here.
Target species
- Largemouth bass
- Crappie
- Hybrid striped bass
- Channel catfish
Local tip: No tide, but generation at the dam pulls current and turns fish on. Wind matters more on water this open — check the gusts before you commit to crossing the main lake.
