Fishing El Paso

El Paso has a mountain range running through the middle of it. The Franklin Mountains rise straight out of the neighborhoods and make up one of the largest urban parks in the country, with desert hiking, rocky singletrack, and ridgelines that look down on two countries and two states at once. Sitting near four thousand feet in the Chihuahuan Desert, the city gets sun on the great majority of days and air dry enough that a hundred degrees feels different than it does on the Gulf — and dry enough that shade and water matter more than the thermometer suggests. Cool months are the prize here: winter days in the sixties make this some of the best hiking weather in Texas, while late-summer monsoon storms bring brief, hard rain and the flash flooding that comes with desert arroyos.

Target species

  • Desert hiking
  • Mountain biking
  • Trail running
  • Rock scrambling

Local tip: No tide, and rarely much rain — heat and sun are the planning problem. Summer hiking means dawn and more water than you think you need, the monsoon weeks from July into September bring sudden storms and running arroyos, and October through April is prime trail season.
