Fishing Lake Amistad
Amistad is unlike any other Texas lake — an international reservoir on the Rio Grande at Del Rio, flooding limestone canyons in genuine Chihuahuan desert with water clear enough to watch a bass eat in fifteen feet. Rock, bluff walls, and flooded brush are the structure, and when the lake comes up after rain in the Devils River and Pecos drainages, that new brush turns on. Most of the shoreline is national recreation area, so camping, boating, and swimming access stays public and uncrowded, and the canyon country nearby holds some of the oldest rock art in North America. The international boundary runs through the lake, and fishing the Mexican side requires Mexican permits — know where the line is. Water level swings enormously with drought.
Target species
- Largemouth bass
- Smallmouth bass
- White bass
- Striped bass
Local tip: No tide out here; go by water level and heat. Fish first light through summer, and after a good rain look for bass pushing into freshly flooded brush.
