Fishing Lake Fork
Lake Fork has produced more of Texas's biggest largemouth than any other water, the state record among them, and the reasons are straightforward: timber left standing when the lake filled, fertile East Texas soil, and a protected slot limit that has let mid-range fish grow into giants for four decades. February and March are the trophy window, when prespawn females stage on creek channel bends and the big-fish calls start coming in. It is excellent crappie water too, with brush piles and timber holding fish year-round, and marinas and lakeside campgrounds make it easy to stay put for a few days. Run the timber carefully — much of it sits just under the surface and it has cost a lot of lower units.
Target species
- Largemouth bass
- Crappie
- Channel catfish
- White bass
Local tip: No tide, so go by water temperature. A warming trend into the high fifties behind a mild late-winter front is the classic setup for the biggest fish of the year.
