Fishing Sam Rayburn
Sam Rayburn is a big, shallow, fertile East Texas reservoir on the Angelina River, and it has been a national tournament stop for decades because it grows both numbers and size. The fishery lives on vegetation: hydrilla and pondweed edges hold the bass, and when the Corps swings the lake level the grass line moves with it, which is why local knowledge here is really knowledge of water level. The upper river arms stain first after rain while the lower end near the dam stays clearer. Angelina National Forest wraps much of the shoreline, so campgrounds, swim beaches, and ramps are easy to find. It is big enough water that a stiff spring wind builds a chop no small boat wants to cross.
Target species
- Largemouth bass
- Crappie
- White bass
- Channel catfish
Local tip: Watch the lake level instead of a tide chart — rising water pushes bass into freshly flooded grass and brush, and a falling lake pulls them back to the outside grass line.
