Fishing Dallas

Dallas does its outdoor living on trails and reservoirs. The loop around White Rock Lake is the city's default run and ride, the Katy Trail carries joggers and commuters through the middle of town, and the wooded preserves on the south and west sides give hikers something with actual elevation change. Mountain bikers head for the singletrack around Grapevine and Lewisville, and those lakes plus Ray Hubbard handle the sailing, paddling, and boating crowd — with white bass, crappie, and big blue catfish for anyone who brings a rod. North Texas weather swings harder than most of the state: spring is severe-storm season with hail and straight-line wind, summer runs hot enough to move everything to dawn, and the wind blows most days.

Target species

  • Cycling trails
  • Mountain biking
  • Kayaking
  • Bass fishing

Local tip: No tides — plan around storms and heat. Spring mornings are the sweet spot, but watch for afternoon supercells from March into June, and shift to dawn rides and paddles once July arrives.
