Fishing Matagorda
Matagorda gives you three distinct fisheries out of one small town. East Matagorda Bay is wade-fishing water — scattered shell reefs, mud and grass bottom, and a reputation for big trout that comes from having no direct pass to flush it. West Bay and the Colorado River mouth run more current and hold redfish and flounder around the jetties and channel edges. The peninsula beach, reachable by four-wheel drive, is as close to empty sand as the Texas coast gets, and it draws campers, surfers, and birders as much as anglers. Wind rules all of it: a hard southeast chop makes East Bay unfishable, and a winter norther can pull the water off it entirely.
Target species
- Speckled trout
- Redfish
- Flounder
- Black drum
Local tip: Wade East Bay on a light wind and a slow-moving tide; the jetties and river mouth want a hard incoming with green water.
