Fishing Port Lavaca

Port Lavaca works the top of the system, where the Lavaca River comes in and the water spreads south into Matagorda Bay, and the fishing here has always been quieter than the coast on either side. Oyster reef is the main structure — scattered shell, deep guts between reefs, and shorelines you can wade for trout and redfish — and the freshwater push from the Lavaca and the Navidad keeps the upper end brackish enough to sort fish by salinity after a wet spring. Black drum and sheepshead stack on hard structure through the cool months, and flounder move through the passes and drains in fall. Being this far up the system, it takes wind hard: a stiff southeast blow turns the open bay into a hard chop while the protected shorelines up in Lavaca still fish.

Target species

  • Redfish
  • Speckled trout
  • Black drum
  • Flounder

Local tip: Fish the moving water, and pay as much attention to the wind as to the tide chart — a sustained south wind piles water onto the north shorelines, and a winter norther pulls it out and stacks fish in the guts.
