Fishing San Marcos
The San Marcos River starts as a set of springs at the head of town and runs so clear that you can watch grass beds and turtles from the surface — a rare thing in Texas, and the reason this stretch of water is both a protected spring system and a college town's living room. Because the springs feed it, the water holds in the low seventies year-round, which makes tubing and swimming a long season rather than a summer one and keeps paddlers on it through the cool months. Below town the river takes on a different character, and parks and greenbelt trails follow the banks for anyone who would rather walk than float. Weather to watch is the same as everywhere on the Balcones Escarpment: hard, slow storms can flood these creeks fast.
Target species
- River tubing
- Swimming
- Paddling
- Hiking trails
Local tip: Nothing tidal about it — the springs are the constant. Clear, low-flow days are best for floating and swimming, high water after upstream rain is for experienced paddlers only, and the river stays busy well past Labor Day.
