Fishing Canyon Lake

Canyon Lake is a deep, steep, unusually clear reservoir on the Guadalupe, and that clarity shapes everything: fish slide off the banks by full daylight, topwater is a dawn game, and the stocked striped bass roam open water chasing shad. It is a recreation lake as much as a fishing lake, with Corps parks, swim beaches, and campgrounds ringing the shoreline and boat traffic owning the middle of a summer weekend. Below Canyon Dam, cold water pulled from deep in the lake keeps the Guadalupe cool enough to hold rainbow trout year-round and cold enough to make it the most popular tubing river in Texas. Flash flooding is the real hazard in this country — the Guadalupe comes up fast.

Target species

  • Striped bass
  • Largemouth bass
  • White bass
  • Rainbow trout

Local tip: Check the release from Canyon Dam before you wade or float the tailwater, and fish the lake itself at first light; clear water makes a midday bite hard to come by.
