Fishing New Braunfels
Two rivers meet in New Braunfels and they behave nothing alike. The Comal comes straight out of the Edwards Aquifer at the springs in town and runs about 72 degrees every day of the year, which is why it fills with tubers from May through September and why locals swim it in January without much complaint. The Guadalupe is a rain-and-release river — bigger, faster, and shaped by what Canyon Dam is letting out, with real whitewater sections when flow is up and a cold tailwater that holds stocked rainbow trout deep into winter. That difference is the local weather question: the Comal is a constant, the Guadalupe is a variable. Flash flooding is the genuine hazard in this country, where a storm parked upstream can put a river out of its banks in an hour.
Target species
- River tubing
- Swimming
- Kayaking
- Trout fishing
Local tip: No tide here — check river flow and the sky upstream. The Comal is comfortable in any month, while the Guadalupe swings with rain and dam releases, and heavy rain anywhere in the watershed means stay off both.
