Fishing Wimberley
Cypress Creek runs into the Blanco at Wimberley, and both are lined with the big bald cypress that give this part of the Hill Country its shade and its swimming holes. Water level rules the summer here — the creek and river can be clear and deep enough to jump into, or low and slow, depending on how much rain the watershed has taken, and springs keep some pools cold when everything else warms up. The rest of the year the appeal is the country itself: limestone hills and ranch roads that draw cyclists, hiking on rocky trails with real views, and a bluebonnet-and-paintbrush spring that fills the roadsides by late March. The Blanco is a flash-flood river with a long memory, and rain upstream matters far more than rain overhead.
Target species
- Swimming holes
- Hiking trails
- Cycling
- Wildflowers
Local tip: Flow is the thing to check, not tides — the swimming holes are best a few days after good rain has cleared, and they shrink through a dry summer. Spring and fall are the prime hiking and riding months, and a storm anywhere in the upper Blanco watershed is reason enough to stay out of the water.
