Fishing Savannah

Behind Savannah lies one of the largest stretches of salt marsh on the Atlantic coast — the Wilmington, Skidaway, and Bull rivers braiding through spartina toward Wassaw Sound. Georgia's tidal range, among the biggest on the East Coast, means the same creek is a redfish highway at high water and a bare mud bank six hours later, so learning a spot here really means learning it at four different water levels. Redfish and trout are the year-round targets, sheepshead swarm dock pilings and bridge rubble in cold weather, and flounder ambush the sandy cuts. Kayakers use the same creeks and the same tide tables, and the marsh is worth paddling for the birds alone. Winter is quietly the best season, when the water clears and reds school in numbers you can see from a poling platform.

Target species

  • Redfish
  • Spotted seatrout
  • Flounder
  • Sheepshead

Local tip: Fish the grass at the top of the flood and the creek mouths on the fall — with this much range, being an hour off is the difference between a great trip and a blank.
