Fishing Tybee Island

Tybee sits at the mouth of the Savannah River, close enough that container ships pass with their names readable from the sand. The tide range here runs seven feet and better, and that single fact governs everything: a creek holding three feet of water at high tide is a mud bank at low, and the fish move with it. Redfish and trout work the spartina edges and oyster rakes on the flood and drop back to the creek mouths on the fall, flounder hold the sandy edges and the Back River, and tripletail show around markers and buoys offshore through the warm months. This is also Savannah's beach — the pier, the sand, and the paddle out to undeveloped Little Tybee draw far more people than the fishing does.

Target species

  • Redfish
  • Spotted seatrout
  • Flounder
  • Tripletail

Local tip: Plan around the swing, not the clock: the last of the incoming floods the grass for redfish, and the first two hours of the outgoing pull bait down to the creek mouths.
