Fishing Waco
Waco punches above its weight outdoors because of Cameron Park — a big riverside park of limestone bluffs, hardwood, and steep, technical singletrack that mountain bikers drive hours to ride, with hiking trails and overlooks above the Brazos for everyone else. The river runs right through the city, flat and slow enough for kayaks, canoes, and rowing shells, and it links up with the Bosque where the two come together. West of town, Lake Waco adds open water for boating and swimming along with largemouth, white bass, crappie, and catfish. Central Texas weather gives this place a long usable season on either side of a hot summer, but it also sits in the spring storm corridor — the same March-to-May window that brings green trails and wildflowers brings hail and lightning.
Target species
- Mountain biking
- Hiking trails
- Paddling
- Trail running
Local tip: Nothing tidal — go by trail conditions and storms. Cameron Park's dirt needs a day or two to dry out after rain, spring and fall are the best riding and paddling months, and summer rides start at first light.
