Fishing Fairhope
Fairhope looks west across Mobile Bay from a wooded bluff, with a long municipal pier and a park at the bottom of the hill. The bay in front of town holds speckled trout, white trout, redfish and flounder, and the piers and pilings up and down the eastern shore give people without a boat somewhere real to fish. This is also jubilee country — a documented Mobile Bay event in which oxygen-poor bottom water pushes flounder, crab and shrimp into the shallows on certain still, humid summer nights, usually in the dark hours before dawn. Nobody can schedule one, and most summers bring only a handful, but calm muggy weather with a light easterly is the setup locals watch for.
Target species
- Speckled trout
- White trout
- Redfish
- Flounder
Local tip: The bay's tide is small and often diurnal, one high and one low, so sustained wind usually decides water level more than the moon does. Calm, humid summer nights with an east wind are the classic jubilee conditions; a hard winter norther pulls water off the shallows entirely.
