Fishing Mobile

Two very different waters meet at Mobile. South of the city, the bay runs wide, shallow and brackish, holding speckled trout, white trout, redfish and flounder along its shorelines, reefs and channel edges. North of it lies the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, one of the largest river deltas in the country — a vast maze of bayou, cypress and marsh where paddlers, birders and bass and bream anglers spend far more time than the saltwater crowd. Because the two systems overlap, the salt line slides with river flow: a wet spring pushes trout south and carries freshwater fish down into water that was brackish a month earlier. Heat and afternoon storms set the daily schedule from June into September.

Target species

  • Speckled trout
  • Redfish
  • Kayaking
  • Birding

Local tip: Tides here are small and often once a day, and river discharge can matter more than either — after heavy rain upstream the delta runs high and stained for days. Moving water beats slack in the bay, and calm early mornings are the paddling window before the breeze and the storms come up.
