Fishing Fredericksburg
Enchanted Rock is the landmark here — a pink granite dome that rises out of the hills north of town and gives Texas one of its few real climbs, with rock that soaks up the sun and turns a summer hike into a serious heat exercise. Cooler months are the reason people plan around this place: fall and winter days in the fifties and sixties make the dome and the surrounding trails genuinely pleasant, and the spring wildflower show along the roads and the Pedernales draws traffic from all over the state. The river itself runs over broad limestone shelves, low and clear in dry spells and violent after a big rain. Between hikes there are vineyards on the hills and a town built for walking, both of which live or die by patio weather.
Target species
- Hiking
- Cycling
- Wildflowers
- Wine country
Local tip: No tide and no gauge to obsess over — go by heat and season. Bare granite gets brutally hot from June through September, so start at dawn or wait for the cool half of the year, and late March into April is peak wildflower time.
