Fishing San Antonio
San Antonio's outdoor life leans on the river and the hills. The Mission Reach rebuilt the San Antonio River south of downtown into a long greenway of paddling trail and hike-and-bike path linking the Spanish missions, and Government Canyon and the north-side parks give hikers and mountain bikers limestone, cedar, and some honest climbing. Half an hour north at New Braunfels, the spring-fed Comal and the Guadalupe carry tubers and paddlers all summer — cold, clear water that stays cold while everything else bakes. Canyon Lake handles the boating and swimming, and the power-plant lakes at Braunig and Calaveras hold redfish and catfish year-round. Heat is the governing fact: triple-digit afternoons run from June deep into September.
Target species
- River tubing
- Hiking trails
- Mountain biking
- Kayaking
Local tip: No tide inland — go by heat and water. Mornings and the spring-fed rivers are the only comfortable options in July and August, and the first cool front in October opens the trails back up.
