Fishing Lake Charles

Lake Charles is the town most anglers stage out of for Calcasieu Lake — Big Lake — the broad, shallow, shell-strewn bay south of the city that has produced trophy speckled trout for as long as anyone has kept records. The ship channel runs deep and busy through the marsh connecting the two, and its edges and the surrounding bayous hold redfish, black drum and flounder alongside those trout. Nearer town, there are lakefront paths, calm paddling water, and the freshwater bayous and rice country to the north and west that draw enormous numbers of wintering ducks and geese. Summer is heat, humidity and afternoon storms; the fall fronts are what actually change the fishing.

Target species

  • Speckled trout
  • Redfish
  • Black drum
  • Paddling

Local tip: Tide is a minor player this far up the system — a small, often once-daily swing that a good wind can cancel outright. Sustained southerly wind pushes cleaner salt water up the lake and the channel, and the first hard northers of fall drop water levels, pull bait out of the marsh, and start the best trout fishing of the year.
