Fishing Lake Livingston
Spread wide and shallow through the piney woods, Livingston is among the biggest lakes in the state and still fishes like the Trinity River it impounds. White bass run up the Trinity in late winter and early spring in the numbers that make this lake's reputation, catfish — blue, channel, and flathead — hold the flats and river channel year-round and grow heavy here, and crappie stack on brush and bridge structure through the cool months. Because it is shallow and wide open, wind is the daily variable: a strong southerly builds a short, nasty chop across the main lake and stains the water on the windward shorelines. Heavy rain in the upper Trinity watershed pushes muddy water down the lake days after the storm has passed.
Target species
- White bass
- Blue catfish
- Crappie
- Largemouth bass
Local tip: No tide out here — watch wind and water color. White bass push upriver as the water warms in late winter, catfish stay dependable straight through summer nights, and a hard blow on a lake this shallow is a reason to fish the protected side.
