About The Poles
The Poles is the beach at the north end of Hanna Park, named for the pilings marking the boundary of the naval station, and it is the most consistent surf break in the Jacksonville area — the jetties at the mouth of the St. Johns just north bend swell onto it in a way the straight beaches to the south never get. Mayport itself guards the river mouth, where an enormous volume of water funnels between two long rock jetties and makes for the best bull redfish and sheepshead fishing on the First Coast.
