About New Smyrna Beach
New Smyrna Beach sits at the north end of Mosquito Lagoon, the shallow, grass-floored estuary that made Florida's redfish reputation, with hard-packed drivable sand out front and Ponce Inlet just to the north. It is also, by shark-bite statistics, the most bitten beach in the world — a function of the inlet pushing bait and blacktips into the surf where a lot of surfers happen to be, rather than anything sinister. The break here is the most consistent in central Florida for the same reason the sharks like it.
