Fishing Lake Texoma

Texoma is the striped bass lake in this part of the country — one of the few reservoirs where stripers reproduce naturally, which means a self-sustaining fishery and fish worth chasing in every month of the year rather than a stocked season. Summer brings surface-feeding schools blowing up on shad in open water; winter puts big fish deep and concentrated, and cold-weather trips here are a tradition, not a consolation. The lake straddles the Red River between Texas and Oklahoma, and licensing on a border lake works differently than it does at home — worth sorting out before you launch. This is wide, exposed water on the edge of the plains: wind builds a serious chop in a hurry, spring storms move through fast, and lake level rises hard when the Red and the Washita take a heavy rain.

Target species

  • Striped bass
  • Blue catfish
  • White bass
  • Largemouth bass

Local tip: No tide, just wind and water temperature. Stripers school on top through the warm months and bunch up deep in winter, low light is the summer window, and a stiff plains wind can put the main lake out of reach for a small boat.
