About Fort Lauderdale Beach
Fort Lauderdale Beach runs along A1A with nothing but a low wall and a strip of sand between the road and the Atlantic, and it faces straight out at the closest deep water on the Florida coast. The drop-off is near enough that you can be in 500 feet of water a couple of miles off the beach — sailfish, mahi and wahoo on a very short run out of Port Everglades a couple of miles south, with a famous winter bite when a cold front pushes north wind against the Gulf Stream. That same north wind is what stands the surf up on this beach, so the picture here is a fair read on what the inlet will feel like.
